Gallery Attendant I’s (GA I) will help to create an accessible and enjoyable experience in the museum galleries by engaging visitors in viewing and discussing works of art while also focusing on protecting the artworks. Scheduled at either of MOCA’s downtown locations—MOCA Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles and The Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo—GA I staff the museum, queuing, and entry points during public hours, special events, and public programs; handle ticketing admissions as well as membership sales and service. GA I help ensure visitor and staff compliance with museum requirements to prevent COVID-19 in public spaces, which may include wearing face coverings and proof of vaccination or negative COVID tests. On an as-needed basis, may be assigned MOCA staff office reception desk coverage which requires ability to execute emergency fire panel procedures.
Essential Functions
Participate in two full-day introductory trainings on visitor engagement strategies, art protection methods, and emergency procedures.
Participate in daily briefings and additional scheduled trainings, including curatorial walkthroughs of new exhibitions. When physical attendance is not possible, watch videos of trainings and walkthroughs, and log this time into employee timecard system.
In partnership with MOCA Security Officers, maintain posts in the museum lobby and galleries during public hours and special events
Greet and orient visitors, engage visitors in viewing art and adhering to museum rules and policies including those set forth in the Visitor Code of Conduct.
Assist MOCA Security in handling fire/life safety protocols, including medical incidents or emergency situations.
Assist with check-in and staffing for special events and public programs, including organizing and communicating with people in line.
Stay up-to-date on museum information by reviewing written all-staff communications and attending all staff meetings.
Be knowledgeable about MOCA membership benefits and how to join; suggest memberships to visitors.
Use Altru and XTruLink ticketing and scanning systems to capture accurate visitor information and process transactions in both free and paid admission contexts.
Execute policies and procedures as outlined in training sessions, staff meetings, as well as written handbooks and supplements.
Using the two questions outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, interview each prospective ticket-purchaser who wishes to bring a service animal into the museum to ascertain that any animal permitted entry is a service animal and not an emotional support animal or pet.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Upon satisfactory completion of a 90-day probationary period:
As positions become available and on-site school tours resume, participate in training to opt in to a weekly shift as a Contemporary Art Start ambassador, assisting MOCA educators, teachers, and students in implementing on-site tours.
Participate in training to perform the duties of the MOCA Staff Offices relief receptionist. Shifts for this position are not guaranteed and will be assigned on an as-needed basis. Reception desk duties include:
Covering MOCA staff offices reception desk during absences or breaks of the regular receptionist, including on weekends and outside of public hours, providing information regarding museum services and programs to in-person visitors and telephone callers in a professional and courteous manner.
Assisting with systems and records of access control and parcel control.
Providing parking validations to staff and record recipients as needed for Wells Fargo, One Cal Plaza, and Walt Disney Concert Hall parking structures. Provide itemized information for expense coding for these parking structures.
Executing fire panel emergency procedures when alarms occur.
Assisting with the distribution of MOCA payroll checks to GAs.
